At Spaza Store we design functional everyday household items guided by environmental kindness and the upliftment of people.
A Spaza (pronounced spawzah) is a South African township word for an informal shop selling everyday items, usually from home.
Our logo comes from a hand-carved stamp, a stylised pin cushion print design for our tiny tops. These surreal looking flowers grow wild in South Africa as part of the protea family - see some more info here. We started using it everywhere. It seems to illustrate perfectly, 'all of us working together to make something amazing'. We couldn't have come up with a better logo if we tried.
Based in Cape Town South Africa, Spaza's functional handmade products are made by women in home industries, empowering care givers to earn an income while remaining available at home and present in their communities.
Our store in Cape Town is in The Watershed, home to contemporary South African handmade products in the beautiful V & A Waterfront.
Founded by Julia Schaffer in 2013, the designs are inspired by Julia’s daily tasks and a need for alternatives to disposable household items. The products are designed by Julia with careful consideration for the natural, sustainable, raw materials that are locally available.
